"I really enjoyed Camp Yukon 101 in Whitehorse. This was my first Provincial Guide Camp. This camp gave me an opportunity to meet a lot of new and very nice girls. I met people from all over Canada and I learned a lot about their different ways of Guiding. Some have Guide meetings that are completely planned by the girls and others have meetings that are huge and organized by leaders. I spoke to one girl who was from a really small town and she only has two girls in her unit. It made me feel grateful to be part of West Point Grey District with lots of girls, great leaders, many camping and event opportunities and funding.
The Yukon was very beautiful. It has very pretty skies and trees and lots of cool wildlife. And the sun never sets – it really is the land of the midnight sun! Really! This was hard to get used to especially when it was time to go to sleep. You would think it was only 9pm and really it was 12:30am and we would all still be wide-awake because it was so bright. This made it hard to get up in the morning sometimes.
The activities that we did were really fun. My favourite was visiting the dogs that are used for dog sledding in the winter. It was really cool to see how much the dogs enjoyed what they were doing and how the trainers had such a great connection with the dogs. Visiting the dogs made me want to get a Husky as a pet.
The site I was on included lots of Yukon and Ontario girls. This resulted in strong connections between the groups. I’m excited to do further Provincial and International camping and I really hope I get a chance to reconnect with my new Guide friends at SOAR or MOSAIC.
I highly recommend that others apply for this type of camp. It was a terrific experience and one I will never forget. Thanks West Point Grey District for sending me on this trip! I really loved it."
