On the way back, they headed to Peace Arch Park in White Rock – to participate in the resurrected Hands Across the Border. It was a frenzy of trading and connecting with Guides and Scouts from both sides of the border. It's a pretty addictive pastime, so don't be surprised if your daughter wants to make small trader crafts over the summer!
It was a sunny and fun-filled weekend for the campers and leaders. The bus took them to Camp McLanlin in Abbotsford, where they stayed in the aptly-named Camelot campsite. The girls prepared their own meals, using a variety of traditional outdoor techniques like campfires, camp stoves, and dutch ovens. The Medieval theme saw the "ladies of the round table" doing archery and jousting, among other activities (such as an old-fashioned water fight?).

Girls and leaders joined the West Coast Area Commissioner, Diamond Isinger, and about 1800 other girls/leaders from around BC. The event? The second Rally in the Valley hosted by Fraser Skies Area in Cloverdale. The fun? Meeting and trading with hundreds of other people, topped off by a traditional sing-along.
What are traders, you ask? These are typically small handmade items intended for swapping with other people. Most traders are "hat crafts" that get attached to a camp hat, but crests and pins can also be traded. Once you have a fun trading experience, it's hard to stop looking for new and unique crafts – using recycled objects, beads, pins, felt, and much more. In the US, they are called SWAPS (Special Whatchmacallits Affectionately Pinned or Shared With A Pal). Girls all over the world create traders to exchange. If your daughter wants to make traders over the summer, for camp or other Guiding events, there are plenty of websites with creative ideas. You can also attach a little label with your name, unit, or district. http://guidezone.e-guiding.com/campc.htm https://browniesmeet.wordpress.com/2012/07/14/summer-camp-swaps-and-traders/ https://www.pinterest.com/wpggirl/my-girl-guides-camphat-crafts-swaps/ http://shiftmama.typepad.com/blog/2013/06/girl-guide-hat-craft-birthday-in-a-bag.html http://www.makingfriends.com/swaps.htm http://www.scoutswaps.com/ The 36th Vancouver Brownies had a clay party at 4Cats to finish off their year. The girls made clay owls, learning about scratch and slip and other clay techniques. The results were terrific - and the girls will collect their finished owls in a couple of weeks (after they have been fired in the kiln). Then it was on to the party food! Girls and parents provided a delicious range of treats - from sushi and noodles to cupcakes and rice krispy squares. The second-year Brownies were presented with Guide program books and their final "Brownie Fun and Adventure Key" pin. Then each girl was awarded an individual trophy, celebrating her special contribution to the unit. It was a fun time for everyone - and a great way to end the Guiding year! |
