Then it was time for bag lunches and some hot chocolate, while the older girls arrived for the afternoon session. From Sparks to Rangers, we formed a huge circle and enjoyed a full campfire of songs. Many songs were new to the younger girls – from Hermie the Worm to I Put a Penny in the Gum Slot – and parents may be hearing some renditions of Black Socks at home.
In the afternoon, the Guides, Pathfinders, and Rangers rotated around five stations. They made their own firestarters and created mini bedrolls and autumn leaf bookmarks. One station started with basic lashing skills, so girls can work up to building useful camp gadgets. The orienteering station showed the girls how to take compass bearings, and they practiced by creating routes for each other. Then they made snug shelters from tarps and ropes.
The day was a great reminder to 'dress for the weather' and stay warm and dry, to make new friends and keep the old, and to try new things. We're all looking forward to more outdoor adventures and camps to come.
